Shocking report on the food you buy!
After watching the documentary “Food Matters” I began digging into some of my old research for a diet program that I was working on and found some interesting reports on the quality of food we consume. This research I did was conducted back in 1999 and now with even more information and interesting findings and research available, I find it much more
of a concern today and is in dire need of our attention. This will prove to you the importance of buying your fruits , vegetables from local organic or pesticide free farmers if you are able to.
In a U.S. senate report into the way Americans do their farming suggested that we may be robbing ourselves of essential minerals and nutrients our body requires.
“The alarming fact is that foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains are being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals, are starving us no matter how much of them we eat.” - Senate Document 264
"The status of our health can be determined by the degree that our earth and our food is nutritious." Hippocrates (460-360 B.C.) asserted, "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food"? he believed the body had an ability to heal itself through food. For years economic pressures on farmers have forced them to abandon traditional practices and concentrate on short term profits. Many farmers are relying on heavy doses of chemical fertilizers to make up for the depleted soil and to push yields beyond their natural levels and lacking important nutrients. Chemical fertilizers are being used so much that they are polluting our waters and depleting soil of its important nutrients. This then leaves our fruits and vegetables lacking the proper nutrients.
I found this interesting quote in my research files from The Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, it stated “foods today may have less than 20% of the nutrients of earlier times.” The fertilizers used today provide 3 main nutrients to the soil N-P-K (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium). The problem is the soil requires about 52 minerals and that is of concern to all of us.
With the farmers relying on chemical fertilizers and also the addition of genetically modified foods, I would recommend for you and your family's well being to purchase your fruits and vegetables from local organic or pesticide free farmers and grocers. Even today some of the large grocery chains offer local organic products.
This is another reason why it may be important to take an extra vitamin and mineral supplement. It may be important to get tested to see which vitamins you may be deficient in. The RDA is not enough and I will explain why in an upcoming post on the need for vitamin and mineral supplements and their importance.
