THIS JUICER IS WORTH EVERY PENNY

My favourite juicer is the Super Angel juicer for overall quality for the price. I still love my Norwalk juicer however the Norwalk is just over $3,000.00 and the Super Angel is sold around the $1,200.00 price range. A great juicer with a great yield of juice and quality stainless steel construction and extremely easy to clean. I do not receive these juicers for free, I purchase them myself and test them thoroughly. This juicer impressed me so much that I gave it to my brother to get him into juicing. I still have my Norwalk and you would have a hard time getting me to part with it but the Super Angel is awesome!

Juicer Review - HUROM HU-100

Our Overall

   Rating 7

I received the Hurom juicer and was anxious to see how this juicer compares to other juicers I reviewed last year.  The Hurom HU-100 is an auger based masticating juicer that cold presses vegetables, greens and fruits producing a higher yield of juice. The juice produced with this Hurom HU-100 had a subtle amount of froth in the juice and a slightly some foam. The juice's did not separate quickly when left in a sealed mason jar in the refrigerated. It did not last as long as the juice from the Norwalk juicer, but at 10% of the price of the Norwalk it was impressive.

After using this juicer for some time now, I found that periodically not all of the vegetable gets fully juiced as a small portion remains in the juicer around the auger. This could have me lowering the rating but at this point I will keep it where it is rated.

The Hurom HU-100 is very easy to clean and makes very little noise. It would be great if this juicer was made of stainless steel however,  priced around the $300.00 USD and in Canada around $329.00 making it an amazing value. The motor is warranted for ten (10) years and other parts are warranted for two (2) years from the date of the original purchase.

On Dr. Oz.....Yakon Syrup for Weight-Loss!

Is Yacon Syrup Effective For Weight Loss?

November 7th, 2013

A recent episode of Dr. Oz extolled the virtues of a little-known product known as yacon syrup, referred to as a “game changer” in the weight loss arena. Today we’ll look at this product and seek reviews from those who have tried it.

About Yacon SyrupYacon syrup is extracted from the tuberous roots of the yacon plant. It contains few calories (about 20 calories in a spoonful) and is low in sugar. The taste has been described as similar to molasses, raisins, or figs. The syrup contains about 30% to 50% of fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a natural sweetener which cannot be broken down easily by the human body. It passes through the digestive tract unmetabolized, resulting in a low calorie food. It is also a prebiotic, which feeds healthy flora in the bowels.

Outside of yacon syrup, you can also get FOS from a variety of fruits and vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, bananas, garlic, and onions. FOS is also available as a supplement.

How to Use Yacon Syrup
Take 1 teaspoon of 100% yacon syrup with or before each meal. It can also be used as a sugar substitute, such as in tea or coffee. You can use it in place of syrup or molasses on pancakes or waffles, or add it to oatmeal or fruit. It has been used as an alternative sweetener for diabetics, vegans, and those seeking to reduce sugar intake.

A Healthy Toast

Celebrate the Season with (Organic) Wine  & Beer

by Wendy Priesnitz

So you’ve bought an organic turkey or have planned a special vegan alternative entrée. You’ll accompany the main course with an organic broth and salad, and maybe top it off with a Fair Trade organic chocolate and hemp ice cream dessert. But what about the wine or beer that you’ll be serving over the holidays? Is it organic? Is it even a legitimate component of a healthy meal? Some people feel they are “allergic” to wine, beer or other alcoholic beverages. But rather than reacting to the alcohol, they may be reacting to some of the components or additives, such as brewers yeast, corn, eggs, molds, sulfites and pesticides. For instance, many wine and beer makers use egg protein to clarify their product during the brewing process, so anyone who is allergic to eggs might suffer a reaction. People with mold allergies also react to fermented products, which includes beer and wine. Sulfites are commonly added to beer and wine, but they are also naturally occurring; the common “red wine headache” can be attributed to sulfites, but they can also give you hives, an itchy nose and congestion.

On the other hand, moderate consumption of one to three drinks daily of beer or wine (especially red) has been shown to be beneficial to your health. A number of studies have shown that having a drink or two per day of alcohol can reduce your chances of developing heart disease. Flavonoids, found in large amounts in the seeds and skins of red grapes,

Kale & Mushroom Quinoa

Serves 2,

A favourite recipe at my house that is nutrient dense, can be prepared from start to finish in 15 minutes and is delicious is Kale & Mushrooms with Quinoa. It’s easy enough too that any teen or adult can prepare it – Mom doesn't have to do everything! There are just 4 ingredients and a few condiments required to create it.

Kale is a hearty fall and winter green and is a member of the brassica family. Along with the cancer-fighting indoles and the detoxification benefits of the sulforphane, kale is extremely rich in antioxidants. It’s also loaded with calcium, iron, vitamins A, C and K, protein & fiber. It’s the perfect food to help our bodies get through the busy holiday season and cold winter weather. When we add cremini mushrooms loaded with cancer-fighting selenium and rich stress combating B-vitamins, we boost our dinner to another nutrient high! Topping the meal with walnuts ups the yum factor, while adding healthy fat to our meal.

Ingredients:

• 6-8 crisp, bright green organic kale leaves
• 8-10 cremini mushrooms (also known as baby bella)
• 1 Tbsp organic butter, or coconut oil
• Juice from half a freshly squeezed lemon
• 1 Tbsp tamari (reduced sodium)
• 5-7 walnut halves
• Extra-virgin olive oil
• Sea salt & freshly ground pepper to taste
• ½ cup organic quinoa
• 1 cup water

Directions:

Rinse the quinoa (pronounced KEEN-whah) thoroughly in a fine sieve. Add the quinoa and water to a small pot with a tight fitting lid. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to minimum, cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes until the water has been absorbed. While the quinoa is simmering, wash the kale, discard the coarse stems and roughly chop the leaves. Wash and quarter, halve or slice the mushrooms, depending on their size. Melt the butter in a large sauté pan and add the mushrooms, kale & lemon juice. Sauté for 3-5 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and the kale is vibrant green and still a little crisp. Remove from the heat, drizzle with the tamari and olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide the quinoa between two plates, top with kale & mushrooms, then sprinkle with walnuts.

Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant, its chief detoxification enzyme and is literally food for the immune system. Immunocal restores optimal glutathione levels.

Many natural products are available that claim to help your immune system, but very few have undergone the rigorous testing and published human trials that Immunotec has accomplished over the years. Over forty published scientific and medical articles attest to its remarkable credibility.

Does Your Orange Juice Contain These Chemicals?

Orange Juice's 'Secret Ingredient' Worries Some Health-Minded Moms

By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES

Dec. 16, 2011

Natalya Murakhver, a New York food writer and mother of an 18-month year old daughter, loved her premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious.

That is, until she said she learned from her first-time moms group that there's a "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling.

Now, after writing Whole Foods, she refuses to buy her favorite, "365" juice, amid uncertainty about its contents.

"One of the moms said she had read about [how the juice is made] and they held it in tanks for up to a year and it pretty much lost all of its flavor and had to be reinvigorated with these flavor packs, which are essentially chemicals," said Murakhver, 40, and co-author of "They Eat What?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World."
