I noticed this article on Yahoo the other day and it scared me to think about how these highly toxic or even deadly ingredients are actually being put into the ingredients of commonly used hair, skin and body products and how we are exposed to them. With all the science today proving that what we put on our skin actually is being absorbed into our body why would they allow it in products? Just read this article....
Feds investigate safety of hair-smoothing product
Federal agency warns of unsafe chemical levels with Brazilian Blowout hair treatment
Formaldehyde, which has been classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen, can irritate the eyes, skin and lungs and cause breathing problems and skin rashes
Government regulators also say they have found the chemical in a variety of hair products that are labeled "formaldehyde-free." The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it is investigating complaints from stylists and hair salon owners about the products.
Many hair products contain formaldehyde, but government regulations specify the amount, labeling and appropriate use of the ingredient. - Associated Press, Tuesday April 12, 2011
One thing I would strongly recommend is that you get your hands on "A consumer's dictionary of food additives" and they have one for cosmetics too. They are available from any bookstore or Amazon. Here is a brief excerpt from the book with regards to formaldehyde:
FORMALDEHYDE - ....Formaldehyde generally is known as a disinfectant, germicide, fungicide, defoamer, and preservative and is used in animal feed, in defoaming additives, and embalming fluid. One ounce taken by the mouth cause death within two hours......Researchers from the Division of Cancer Cause and Prevention of the National Cancer Institute recommended in April 1983 that since formaldehyde is involved in DNA damage and inhibits its repair, and potentiates the toxicity of X-rays in human lung cells, and since it may act in concert with other chemical additives to produce mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, it should be "further investigated."...
Why would you want to be within miles of this stuff. They do try to justify in some research that the small amounts you are exposed to in these products is too small to have any effect. What about if you use it every day, what about if there is too much used, and quite frankly I wouldn't knowingly put anything toxic or deadly product in or on my body and I don't want to be the ginny pig!.
I find it strange that these types of toxic ingredients are permitted. Now lets look at Parabens. These are most commonly used in hair, skin and body care products and even products like mouthwash as well. I happened to be looking at the ingredients of a bottle of Crest mouthwash at a friends house and I couldn't help but notice it had PARABENS. Really...in mouth wash... really, parabens. And they wonder why the sperm count in men has dropped so much not to mention all the other possible effects on the body. Today, many manufacturers have now taken parabens out of their products due to pressure from consumers but I'll give you an excerpt from the book for you information.
PARABENS - Butylparaben. Heptylparaben. Methylparaben. Propylparaben. Parabenhydroxybenzoate. The parabens are the most commonly used preservatives in the United States as a preservative in surface treatment of dried meat products, cereal- or potato-based snacks and coated nuts, etc.... In foods, parabens function as preservative that prevents the growth of molds and yeast....It had been reported that methylparaben caused birth defects in offspring of mice and rats....The European Parliament said that in 2003 that parabens should be reevaluated because they have been found to cause cell proliferation in the forestomach and developmental toxicity......in 2004, a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology (2004. 25:5) reported parabens are a cause for concern. British researchers found traces of it in twenty women who had breast tumors... parabens act like female hormone estrogen....parabens may contribute to the notable drop in sperm count in European men. There is pressure by some members of the EU and scientists in other countries to ban the use of parabens in underarm deodorants, in particular, and in foods....
It is shocking that it is still permitted to be used in 70 to 90 percent of cosmetics, shampoos, makeup, lotions, and deodorants. Why would you go near this stuff.
Another commonly used preservative that is found in many canned food items that you should be aware of is Disodium EDTA. Look it up, you won't touch it that product again. I stay away from canned products in most instances where I able and I especially stay away from those with these types of preservatives and I definitely stay far away from hair, skin and body care products with Parabens and other toxic ingredients.
If you don't have access to the book, you can always look up the ingredients online. Try www.skindeep.com or www.alkalizeforhealth.net. these are favourites of mine for looking up ingredients. Recently I looked up Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which I found in a product and was shocked to find that it was used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. What bothered me most was the possible side effects: "severe skin irritation, central nervous system depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, and even death."
On a bright note...I found a product line that is amazingly natural and claim you can even eat it. I had the opportunity to experience Hugo Naturals at a health expo in Toronto and then in Anaheim, California. It is available at many health food stores in Canada and the U.S..
IT'S SO NATURAL YOU CAN EAT IT!
HUGO NATURALS.... It is so natural, you can even eat it! The owner Hugo was a chef prior to starting this company. This was the inspiration for his product line. When I met Hugo at the show, he explained how he felt that whatever you put on your body, should be as safe as what you would put in your body. They have soaps, shampoos, scrubs, bath salts, baby products and many other neat products and is available at most quality health food stores or visit their website https://www.hugonaturals.com.
